if you can survive for a few years it should get better and then who do you think gets to fix all those BAD installs! almost a win win situation, except for the customer that is. they have to pay twice for something that should of been a one time deal plus maintenance.

did anyone see Jim Cramers interview on the Daily show? oh boy that look liked fun on Jon Stewarts side! lol

Here's a good one - got a flier in the area going around from A-1 Lawn Service - Cuts as low as $15 and your first MONTH is FREE.
I just had to laugh my butt off. These guys are gonna get eaten alive. Imagine giving away a month of cuts in the HEAVY GROWTH season. HA!

If I were to give a month free, it sure as heck wouldn't be the first month.

It would be the last month or when its a dry month. i would chose the month they got for free, not theirs. Well ive lost already 5 accounts and had 6 letters come back to me because the house is vacant or foreclosed. Oh and a condo. so i already know im screwed for the season. Ill just downsize and wait it out. Ill even get my fat ass out and cut myself if i have too.

I feel the "lowballer mania" on my side of town as well..I'm in farmington hills and am beginning my fourth year in business... I have had my throat cut by "owl do yer lawn fer 20" companies on a few of my accounts where they easily cost 30-35 per week..How these guys survive i don't know. I hate how saturated this industry has become..especially around this area( farmington hills, west bloomfield etc) Makes me sick to think how much i may loose to idiots with no signs, no insurance and no expertise. Although, in the end the customers that went with the "great deals" will be back..I do too good of a job to get my throat cut like this..ouch.

Also felt the pinch on the snow side this year as well with "60 dollar seasons" what a joke! Im debating on going back to school and finishing my degree although that industry is taking a dump right now too...
Im a solo operation and i don't have many accounts to spare...feeling pretty nervous right now. Ive been flyering more than when i first started just to keep my standard of living up. I hope all you guys do well this year!

i was passing some flyers out last night and didn't even bother in some neighborhoods that i usually hit. There would be like 5-10 other lawn care flyers around the mailbox! I think HO's aren't even bothering taking them out. I picked a few out to see what competition I had and a lot said "We'll beat any written estimate by 15%!" or One month free this, one month free that, free mulch delivery, etc etc.

I hate flyers, but they work and for the money, it pays off. I also threw out a few yard signs and got a call for a big yard cleanup about 5 hours later, cant beat that.

I'm considering doing a lot of direct mail this year, if I can get the postcards in the mailbox rather than on it with 10 others, I think I'll have better luck.

i spent $100's a month last year on passing out fliers, i only recieved a few calls the entire year. i think home owners dont even bother to check them. genereally if they are looking for a service they will look for you. in my area anyway. even with that said i think im still going to pass some out.

i have some funny stories too... one time last year i was passing them out i watched a lady pull in her drive behind me, get out to get the mail, grab my flier and throw it on the ground. another time a guy called to yell at me because it was windy so the fliers blew out, i apologized and then asked if he wanted an estimate.
