Fert is very different than lawn maintenance. I dont see how fert applicants in general could "survive" unless they go to different areas. The key is to have a full route every week to stay busy and most importantly keep that money coming in. Its not like cutting where you're coming back to the same house or business weekly...

Applications get applied on average every 4-8 weeks... *More or less....

Really trying to not be sarcastic but I have been in this biz for 13yrs now, I know how the dice rolls...I was just surprised he came out this far as we have some pretty good applicators locally. Maybe that says something about their company which would be a good thing.

We had about 6 customers in Northville/Novi last year use Lush, and they were very disappointed. All 6 have cancelled and went elsewhere! I know my brother uses Top Lawn or something like that and they seem pretty good.

Thanks for the feedback on Lush Lawn, we'll check them out. Anyone else interested, please post or PM, we'd be glad to talk.

We are using Top Lawn this year as our residential sub, but he won't take on any more commercial accounts right now.

I just received a letter from the Michigan Dept of Agriculture yesterday outlining their new law regulating out-of-state nursery stock purchases. Basically, every company that plants or sells anything winter hardy must now get a license -- that would be pretty much all of us. You must either document everything you buy was grown in Michigan, or submit to expensive audits by the Ag inspectors.

Anyone else get this letter & start thinking through how this will impact us? This could be a very big deal.

Is this more than just a "Nursery Stock License"?

What worries me the most is that they are being very coy about the inspection costs. You *must* pay them for the privilege of being inspected. Its $55 per hour with a minimum of one hour. But what's to say the "inspection" doesn't last for two weeks? Sounds to me like an order to write a blank check to the State.

This will undoubtably affect all growers the most. They must be tearing their hair out right now. Get ready for some big price increases, folks!
