Please give me your opinion on a 93 chevy...

Hello Guys, I have been searching quite some time for a work truck to ad to my fleet as im tired of using a 4$0,000 new Dodge Ram for work. In my area 3/4+ ton trucks are difficult to come by for a reasonable price and in good condition. Found out tonight a buddy of mines father has a 93 Chevy 3500 crew cab diesel for sale and is willing to take 5500 dollars for it. It has a brand new diesel motor with 30,000 miles but the truck has a whole has 175,000. The transmission has recently been checked (oil changed) and appears to be strong. The truck is in exellent condition and has never towed much. This truck would fit my needs very well and is in my price range. I am a bit concerned about he high mileage though. What do you think about this deal? this year truck in general? Any comments would be well appreciated as I would like to make a decision within the next day or so. Thanks

That is really not much for mileage on a HD truck. I'm more concerned why the original diesel motor didn't last longer. Most diesels are not considered broken in until 100,000 miles. GM mades some really good trucks in the 90's. I would think the truck would be real good for your needs.

I have 170,000 on my 1993 1/2 ton GMC. It only has a 4.3 in it and we pull everything with it. It is only supposed to be our erand truck but somehow it always ends up pulling something.

I wouldn't flinch at 175,000 miles. Check for rust around the shock towers and any other hiding places. If those are good then I would say jump on it. Even if something goes wrong with the truck they are too cheap and easy to work on to let them pass by.

If you take care of the truck there is no reason that you shouldn't get another 175,000 miles on it.

It only has 145,000 miles because it is a Chevy diesel. My 97 had 145,000 kms when the diesel broke the crankshaft. This is the third engine in this truck of mine. I have $22,000 in repairs for the past 14 months in it. IF you are sure the maintenance has been provided for the truck I would not be too worried, especially if you know that it has not been worked. Just make sure that the power is going to be what you are looking for. These diesels were pretty low hp.

Being as this truck is a '93, it will have the mechanical injector pump, which is good. '94 and later had Stanadyne electronic injector pumps, and they had lots of problems with them. You might take the truck to a certified mechanic who also has good diesel knowledge and let him go over the entire truck for you. The 4L80-E 4spd auto is a good unit. This truck you are looking at will have a 4L80-E. I have one in my Chevy 1-ton truck at work, and it has been flawless. I just run in "Drive" when i'm hauling or driving in the city, and I also make sure the fluid is changed every 30,000 miles. Best of luck.
