North east organics

Would a program of corn gluten meal in the spring and fall along with corn meal applications work for northern cool grasses such as the ones found in my area (long Island, NY). If not what would be an alternative? If it does work, what time schedule should be used?. Thanks in advance.

Carl

Hey Lech615, I'm certainly no expert on this, but corn gluten meal should work on any and all grasses. It works as a pre-emergient by attacking young shoots, and is a good source of nitrogen fertilzer. You might want to do an internet search. You're not exactly in a rural area, I'm sure there's people around you that are up on organics and can give you the best plan for your conditions.
Good luck

Randy

Timing for preemergents is the real problem. Timing is everything whether you're using corn GLUTEN meal or synthetic versions. You'll have to check with local experts to get a handle on when to apply any preemergent. It is probably more related to night time low temperatures and light levels than any set calendar date.
