Cracked corn might be good for fertilizer, but dont it sprout?

I've been wondering this for awhile if you apply it to a whole lawn.

Yeah, you get the odd sprout here and there, but they wont survive long with regular mowing. THey seldom get past the sprout stage, Although i did have nice stalk growing in my garden...

i have also sifted the corn thru 3/16 mesh and that removes most of the full kernels, but its really a waste of time.
The 'rolled corn' that i use is maybe 5-10% full kernels.

I wouldn't worry about ending up with a corn lawn....

been using cracked corn for weed control. this is my 3rd year.
i pay $110 / ton. this was the first year, due rain that i had a stalk come up.

It only sprouts from the whole corn kernels. Any grinding or crushing and it becomes non-viable. Cracked corn should be fine except for the very few pieces that make it through uncracked. Ground corn should have no whole kernels.

Corn prices vary in a range. I get 50-pound bags of ground up corn meal that looks like you could cook with it (until you factor in the beetles) for about $0.10 per pound. A local baker I know gets whole corn in huge bulk for $0.15/pound. Go figure.

Can you treat the cracked corn as a pre emergant. I know corn glueten can be used as a pre emergant but I can not find any around here, only cracked corn.

cracked corn is to course, cost $210/ton
corn meal is real dusty works like pre-m, cost $207/ton
look under yellow pages --- fertilizer-retail, feed dealers
they can get it for you

Thanks for the info, my COOPs around here only carry cracked/ground corn. It is a mix of powder and course particals. Cost around $5-6.00 for 50lbs.

The idea that ordinary corn meal works as a preemergent is a finding from a homeowner who does a bit of experimenting. There is no academic research on this that I am aware of. The academic research was done on corn GLUTEN meal - a different product.

If ordinary corn meal works as a preemergent, or even works a little bit, the cost effectiveness may actually work, but the practical effectivness may not. The application rate for corn GLUTEN meal as a preemergent is 40 pounds per 1,000 square feet. This is a TON of yellow dust. Let's say that ordinary corn meal was 1/4 as effective as corn GLUTEN meal. Then would you apply 160 pounds of corn meal per 1,000 square feet? You may as well just lay the unopened bags down on the soil and smother everything!!

Can you use a spreader for cracked corn?, if not how do you apply?
