Hard to get Gravely WB in gear

I have a Gravely PRO-200, model #988063, 50" fabricated deck WB mower It has a Peerless/Tecumseh transmission, model #700-052. Problem is it's hard to get it into 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear. You have to play with the shift lever until it will catch the gear and sometimes it will pop out of gear once you get moving. The entire shifter linkage is tight and solid. I have tried to adjust the linkage going to the transmission shift arm, but it doesn't help. I am fairly mechanical, but haven't split the transmission case open yet and would like helpful advice before I do. Could the rod and fork assembly be worn, or maybe the shift keys are shot? What should I look for? Better to just buy an entire new one?

Wow, Thats something Ive never had happen before ? Ive got the same trans on two of my walkbehinds that are both quite old and they shift just fine ??/ I have had an issue where the shift arm gets a bit loose and catches on the gate while trying to shift , but it never popped out of gear... I too have never had one of these apart. Would be real curious to know what has happend...

the shiht keys in your transaxel are broken.
it comes from shifting on the go

You make a good point about shifting on the go. I Have two wb's with the same trans. and I never shift under a load, even though it says it's okay to do it.

Landscaper Supply sells that same trans. brand new for under 200.00.

Hard to get Gravely WB in gear

Thanks sawman65. I inherited the mower and I am not sure how it was operated. The previous owner could have shifted it on the move. As long as I make notes during disassembly, is replacing the shift keys an easy fix? Are the parts fairly inexpensive?
