Fertalizing many times a year?

The fert I was useing last year was 4-6-4 organic, recomended only two applications per year, and the one we are useing this year is 20-4-10 and also recomends only two aplications per year, as the mulched grass clipings continut to fertalize, and laom up the soil over the remainder of the year. I thought you only need a boost in the spring, and a little extra boost to put it to bed in the winter. We are in southwest Ohio.
