belt release

Hey to all.
I have older mtd. rider.{12-38} I has had rough use and now the deck does not want to come forward all the way when raised. It has one spring for assist on the right side but does not get the job done. when trying to start the blades rotate and of course puts to much strain on the starter, I am sure others has had this trouble also. What is the best or a cure for this problem? Help, Help.. I has the proper belt and size, pulleys are in good shape. bearings and quills are not damaged. Thanks Paul.

On MTD of that type if I remember right there is a rod that goes from the back of the deck to the lift handle. It is about 2 1/2 feet long and runs a angle. This rod is threaded on the end that hooks to the lift handle. By adjusting this rod you adjust how far the deck is pulled forward to disengage the blades. Be careful if you adjust it too far the deck will be pulled into the motor pulley when you raise the deck.
