Spark arrestors...

I just took it off the Echo trimmer as it has been running a bit rough. Question is this: I'm no mechanic, so I took off the metal shroud piece and put the screen back on. Should I leave the screen off too? Not sure if that is what plugs up or not (screen appeared to be clear) , the shroud thingl looked pretty caked with crap, and it seems to run better now. Sounds like a dirt bike...

Did I do this right? Any suggestions?

Buck
