For what purpose do they want the trench dug?

Do they want a 4" drain line dropped in it, or do they want a swale created?

We typically charge around $40 per hour for labor, but that is OUR overhead, not yours.....

When it comes to moving dirt, we tend to save our backs as much as possible and get whatever machinery makes the job easier..........................

I could do it for 40/hr per guy. depending on the length I would probably use a Kubota if it exceeded something like 6-7 foot also depending on the soil type, take a shovel wtih you to the estimate and dig a hole. I read your post with the specs of the job, see if you can get a kubota because you could knock it out in like 4 hours with a machine a little hand work.
