125,000 Question Answer

After reading Bobby Gedd's post about the possibility of a solo lco grossing 125K, I put some numbers togther.

60 customers X average cut $35 X 40 cuts a year = 84000
60 spring cleanups X 60 each = 3600
60 fall cleanups x 60 each = 3600
misc mulch jobs, tear my old barn down jobs, etc = 12000
work as a prostitute on Sundays $420 each Sunday X 52 in a year = 21840


Total = 125,040

Yeah I think it is impossible to gross 125K as a solo even working 7 days a week

1. we don't get 40 cuts per year here in NJ
2. not everyone will require a spring cleanup
3. not everyone has trees (fall cleanup not required)
4. i'm sure bg will want more $$$ for sunday activities

i would say once bobby gets male enhancers the sunday work will be free.

Try this:

60 customers X average cut $45 X 42 cuts a year = $113,400
60 spring cleanups X $150 each = $9,000
60 fall cleanups x $225 each = $13,500
misc mulch jobs, tear my old barn down jobs, etc = $15,000

= $170,900 Gross working 55 hours weeks Mon - Sat. = $59.76 per hour.

That is the average for an aggressive solo operation here in the South. I personally know several LCO's that are in this range and do not care to add any new customers. One LCO has been doing this for 15 years and I am always amazed to watch him work. He loves what he is doing and it shows in his work and customer retention.

We all know what the operationial costs are so we can guess at the NET profits.

Hey , That "sunday work could be a real "cash cow" around my customer base (no pun intended) I'm now thinkin bout dropping the mowin and go for the real money.

But let's not forget - it is BG! He'll need probably 600 cliuents to do that amount because he'll get into disputes w/ some, drive otherd to the police station, yell and scream w/ others and use all of his charm on the balance. Out of the 600, he may find 60 that aren't PITAs that will agree w/ his work ethics. Besides, if he keeps the pre-pay fert money from the 540 or so that he loses and has only done but one application, he may be able to afford better beer than coors lite! After all, the main reason he can afford the coors now is because of all of the disposal fees he saves on w/ his midnight run dumping procedure.

Vet Green, If you are charging $60. per clean-up, are looking for any work??? I will sub out all my clean-ups to you and even give you $65.00, because I am a nice guy. And in turn you will do the work and I will make a decent wage for not even getting out of bed. Let me know when you can start.

lets not forget to minus out all the court days,
and all those weekdays he takes off (why he works weekends, after all leasure time on the weekends are for weekend warriors).
and the days spent agruing with relatives TV repairman.

Clients make the difference

With the types of clients you keep mentioning, I dont think 125K is possible. However, in my area there are "Gentlemen Farmers". These are guys who buy farms here around the horse country and have 2-8 acres of pasture to mow. They dont own a tractor and pay me to mow for them. I have 4 of these customers that pay between 350-500 each a week for me to run my 6' skag around their fields. I trim around the outside of the fence posts every other week and apply fertilizer to the acre around their house four times a year (also for a big fee). I picked up a complex controlled by the builder in town and met the owners as they moved in one at a time as they were built. When their homeowner assoc. took over they voted me the contract (22K for a 36 unit development on 2 acres (houses are 12 feet apart). This takes me 4 hours total ramp open to ramp closed( have to use my small stuff in there). Iam cutting the next development for same builder as well next spring. I hope to capture that one as well. With some luck and another gentlemen farm or two, I will hit the 125K MAGIC NUMBER. These farms also provide some extra clean up jobs such as a fallen tree to be chainsawed. They pay $3000 for one medium red oak- cut and haul away ( to my wood pile at home).
