Commission sales staff?

Anyone have a percentage of gross sales they pay to a straight commissiones salesperson. Lost my sales guy to health problems & we need to replace his sales work. I have already assigned his other duties to other staff members, but have not come up with a good solution for the sales end. I do some sales to larger customers myself, & can't afford to hire someone full time just for sales. Any suggestions?
