Hey guys, looking at purchasing a 2nd company truck for a real good deal. its an 2004 dodge ram 1500 laramie 4x4 with the hemi. Just curious as to wether anyone on here tows with them or a comparable half ton. whats the most you can legally tow with one of these? I would be hoping to tow a t190 or s185, the odd time(read not daily, just when my 3/4 tonne isnt available)

    thanks.

-also the trailer is a tandem axle and weighs 2460 pds i believe

If I was buying a gasser pickup in a half ton it probably would be a Chevy. Anybody I know that has a hemi 1500 says its got power but it drinks the gas. The Hemi trucks also have those large diameter wheels with the low pro rubber not sure how well they would do pulling a heavy load.

Oh boy these guy's are gonna give you HELL for towing with a half ton.

I agree with them...Even every so often a T-190 is alot of weight for a half ton.If it were me I would try and find a 3/4 ton FORD.

Like stated in my original post, this truck is only when my 3/4 tonne is not available. I have seen a few people around here tow t190 and 257b behind half tons , but i just wanted some opinions from anyone on here who does.

GR, you might as well forget that drinking the fuel thing, buddy of mine has one and when I borrowed it for the week. I got 14mpg. I only get 15 out of the Dakota!

Any gas motor that has some ass behind it is going to drink some gas..

TSS, I think that Dodge would do it, nothing like a 3/4ton but it'd do it if you NEEDED it..

I'm sure it will work as long as you don't mind not being able to steer, stop, or keep the safety chains from dragging.

We got a stripped down F250 that has a 5.4 and it can pull the skid but it is not fun and would not recommend it personally.

I towed a bobcat with a Toyota pickup once.

The next week I sold it to a guy in Idaho.

Legal? Possibly. Will the truck do it? Definately, but it won't be the best option, obviously. As long as you're aware of both of those conditions, the decision is up to you. I personally wouldn't plan on towing anything over 7,000 pounds with a half ton truck, even occasionally. Been there, done that, won't do it again but that's just me. You could go out for the maiden voyage, have something go wrong, and kill someone or yourself in the process all to save a couple bucks. Not worth it IMO.

Most half ton trucks are mainly daily drivers or carrying light load they are a little heavier than the previous years that used 15 inch wheels and smaller brakes. The trucks are still no designed for carrying or pulling alot of weight even a occasional heavy trailer isn't that safe.
