I am looking to get a 3500 or 4500 dump truck. What should i expect when it is not loaded? I am looking at either gas or diesel, and a newer one 2003 and up. I just want to know what to expect.

I assume your looking at Chevy ?

A 3500 is a completly different breed from a 4500. A 4500 is a light medium duty. For mpg on a 4500 Chev your not buying one for that purpose.

If your looking at a Ford F-450 F-550 you will get a better MPG because the truck has a smaller scale cab on them.

To sum it up don't expect a 4500 sized or F-450 to get any better than 12mpg.

I was looking at either ford, chevy, or dodge. It depends on what i find when the time comes.

I get about 8 mpg with my 98 GMC 3500 with the 454 engine. I wouldn't imagine a newer model would get much better. I'd go with a diesel if I were you. They're saying gas could hit 4 bucks a gallon soon.

well the only 4500 out there is a chevy...and thats a bigger truck. the ford f450 is a hoss, but i dont think they get the best mileage. when your thinkin 1 ton or 1 1/2 ton, go diesel.

you need to compare apples to apples. my f550 diesel get bad mileage, about 9-10 around town. mine goes down at highway speeds because it has488 gears. at 65 mph im at about 2500 rpms drinking fuel. my f350 has gotten as good as 19.5mpg highway, 10.5 towing, but usually around 12-13 towing. it has 373 gears in the rear. all depends on driving, gears, and load size.
