    Gerd - saw a comment on another thread and wanted your opinion. A member stated that since the 8000 had a larger motor, it would sharpen a straight blade than a 9000. Both have 3450 rpm motors with 1" wheels, assuming both had same softness/hardness wheel? Your thoughts?

    Yes the MAG-9000 has a 3/4 HP unit and the MAG-8000 has a 1 HP continuious duty motor.

    This will not really increase grinding speed they both sharpen essentially at the same speed rate.

    The reason for the heavier duty motor on the MAG-8000 is because the MAG-8000 more often is purchased by service shops, and service shop employees (not being owner/operators) are typically harder on equipment. So we made the MAG-8000 pretty much unstoppable. It is possible to slow down the motor of the MAG-9000 but we have a thermal protection switch built in and if someone pushs into the wheel hard enough to slow the wheel, this amount of pressure will not yield a faster cutting speed. At that point you have gone past the speed/feed limit of the grinding wheel.

    I like to refer to the use of the larger motor as "employee resistant"

    Yes, often the mis-conception is that more horsepower will grind faster, and this is not really the case. Grinding speed has more to do with the RPM and abrasive matched to what you are cutting.
