I have a 34 gravely Z with the 17 Kawasaki with only 400 hours that has started missing really bad. Last week I pulled the plugs and the left one was a golden brown like normal and the right one was black sooty. I replaced the right plug and it was still missing.....this morning after sitting for 3 days the mower was bellowing out black smoke and running horrible for the first min or so and then went back to it's regular miss. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Have you adjusted the valves on this unit yet? Start there then go with the basics have you tried different gas? Could be a batch of bad gas. While the engine is running, take a set of RUBBER handled pliers and pull the spark plug boot off of the righ side cylinder and note any change in performance then replace that boot and remove the left sides spark plug boot and see if the engine dies or performs considerably worse than before with the right side off. Bad coil could easily be causing your problem.
