17hp kaw. oil coming from some where?

    I just bought a "gently used" :) 52" Ferris DD with a 17hp Kawasaki V-Twin on it. I brought the mower home and put it in the garage over night(left tilted back b/c of deck cleaning). When I got back from school the next day there was quite a bit of oil on the cardboard under the mower. I looked over the engine and it seems to be coming from the left cylinder looing from back to front of the engine. Changed the oil+filter, left sit for a few nights, maybe one drop on cardboard. Used it this weekend on some slopes and leaked alittle(same spot). could this be a bad gasket? should i tighten down bolts around cyl. head? About 2 1/2 -3 seasons on engine, in excelent condition.

    oil is probably from the crank case vent or a leaking valve cover gasket. do not mess with the head bolts. Clean it up, check oil level and run it. monitor the oil level throughout the day and keep an eye out for leaks.

    haven't done anything with it yet (maintenance). I have been checking the oil regularly. Do you think I might have to replace something anytime soon or should I just run it and keep tabs on the oil level?

    Is the oil leaking around the gasket area or somewhere else ?? valve cover maybe ?? Carfully inspect and located exactly where its coming from .. Then You can decide what to do to correct it..

    I'll check on that probably Thursday night. I have a Calc. II test Thursday so I will be studying today. I will take the covers off, clean it, and try to find the source.

    I'll get back later this week.

    I figured it out. The crankcase gasket was broken. I took the covers off a second time and could see a small gap where the gasket had worn away. Not sure how that happened but it is in the shop now and should have it back by Monday. I like to work on my mowers but do not trust myself to do that kind of involved work on the engine. Figured I would just play it safe.
