We found a couple of these on a system the other day.

The lid is only 2" in diameter, but the box flares out to about 6" by the bottom.

    Pretty stupid.

They were designed to be used on a manual system for the brass globe or angle valves. Flip open the lid and use the key to turn on the valve.

Makes sense, except for how quickly they dissapear in turf.

OK... There's 30 small round boxes covered over by turf in this area. :)

Oh... You wanted a picture of the small round box, did you?

For those who don't have to work on these systems, I would think that would be a plus.

I know for my DIY installation, I quickly noticed how 6" round valve boxes at least get nicely hidden (but findable) in the grass, but coloring the large rectangular boxes doesn't do a thing to hide them, and they're just so big that the grass will never hide them.

oh the grass will cover them... the main technique for finding those grown over is just stabbing around with a screwdriver

Guess those were the smallest they could find, kind of reminds me of those old Easter Egg hunts.

    Leave them exposed.

There's nothing worse than being in a 400 square foot lawn, knowing generally where a valvebox should be, and spending 20 minutes poking arodn with a screwdriver.

One of these days I'm going to get a 521.

The other day we had spent over half the day looking for a valve, We knew a zone wasn't coming on, but we couldn't find the valve (it was 3" below grade).

Get a plastic sniffing dog, best darn dog you will ever have! If you train it right it will dig them up too.
