I have a 20 hp briggs v twin that has been getting harder and harder to start. when it is cold, I turn the key and I get absolutely nothing the first try. turn the key off then back on and I get a click. I keep repeating the off/on with the key and get a little more each time until maybe the 5th or 6th turn of the key it finally turns over very slow then faster until it starts. Doesn't do it as bad when it's hot. I checked all the wiring connections and they are clean and tight.

Put a multimeter set on DC voltage on the battery cables then turn the key to start and watch the meter, If it drops below 9 volts put the tester on the post and see if it still drops, If so I would say the battery is bad. If it doesn't drop on the post re-clean the cables. If it doesn't drop that far then check for battery voltage at the solenoid with the key in the start position, If battery voltage exists then replace the solenoid.
