The oil pan gasket on my 27hp verticle shaft kohler is leaking again. The gasket leaked near the oil filter right at 300 hours. I was told 10 days was the soonest the gasket would come in so i made my own from paper bought from Advanced. It worked for about 12 hours and now it leaks again a few inches away once warm.

    Is this a common problem?

What is causing this? I now think it may have a warped block or oil pan.

If warped i may try to machine it and use a lot of high temperature rtv. Any suggestions?

Put a straight edge on the pan and block and check for warp-age.

Below is the recommended sealants by Kohler, Also make sure you torque to proper spec. and pattern.

thanks for the quick reply, i must say you are on the ball.

however, the links didn't work for me. Could you check them?

I am surprised that it actually calls for rtv since the original gasket was paper. Thanks again.

Use a thin coat of RVT with the paper gasket, The 23 hp and smaller have no gasket but over 23 hp does.

Some engines have pan gaskets and some use RTV. Post your spec and I'll check it out for you.

Also, make sure your engine has the new solid dowel where the oil passes through the block (right behind the oil filter). The old style ones are split.
