Guys and Ladies I have doo doo coming from 27 more horses now.

    They will have shavings mixed

18 besides the 27 have wheat straw mixed

Total of 45 horses (Lotsa doo doo:))

We all know making good compost Is like baking a good cake

I have a source of shavings from the wood working shop But...... What else should I be adding to this flow of Manure?.......I need Carbon to smoke out those weed seeds.
I'm Interested on your thoughts of what I could be mixing with this Horse Doo Doo

    Daner In The Deep stuff:)

    Yep what he said
You probably have lots of straw up there right now after the winter wheat harvest, they normally use the corn left overs for silage but that would work too

I should have said that I need the carbon to add to the N for the heating process to smoke out the seeds:)....Thanks for the replies guys
Bill...Yes we got straw around town....lotsa spoiled hay as well
The new Manure I got with the mixed shavings Is really hot ,There was some scrap hay In there as well burnt black....I'm keeping a close eye open when i flip this stuff for fire

They have long meat thermometers, about 12 inches long, that are real cheap, move some of the top compost away and stick it in the pile. If it is 165 or above you will have to move quick to turn it

A buddy of mine does composting on a large scale every morning and afternoon his guy goes to every pile and reads the temp, if the pile is 160 or above it is red flagged and turned right away

You want the internal temp down inside the pile, I guess you could dig a hole and point it in there but the disturbance may give a false reading, I don't know I haven't tried it

I know the guy i know has a 4 foot long thermometer that he sticks into the pile, of course his piles are over 40 feet tall and at least 200 yards long
Happy summer back at ya, we were just in Mass and the weather was beautiful. I head for the outer banks of NC next week, we have a house right on the ocean, a little slice of heaven, great surf fishing. Let me rephrase that, I do a lot of fishing just not a lot of catching
