So I have this 8hp Briggs engine that was given to me last year, also a 36" Gravely walk behind with no engine.....can I put the two together or is it too weak an engine? I am thinking if this works, I wouldn't use it in fast gears and definitely not with a sulky. by the way this machine is only for a backup and not for everyday use. Am I asking for trouble?

I used a 12.5hp 48" belt drive with a sulky and it had no problem. As long as the grass isn't real long, you run single not double blades, and it's belt drive I think you would be fine.

IMO, A 8 hp is no where near enough to run the twin blades along with the drive system, I believe you will be waisting your time. I wouldn't go less than 12.5 hp.
