4 door truck under 6,500lbs gvw

    any suggestions on a 4 door truck that doesn't have a gvw over 6500 lbs?

    since if you are over 10k u have to have dot numbers, and most landscape trailers are 3500lbs gvw. i am gonna try to find a truck to stay under since my chevy 2500 is way over it.

    why do you need a four door truck to cut grass? If you are only pulling a small single axle trailer with one mower then maybe an s10 or ranger. but any more wieght than that would be asking alot of a small truck

    i would like to have at least a two door with an extra jump door for access.
    i also have a dual axel trailer.

    Why do you want to stay under 6500#, I think most 1/2 ton trucks are more than that. Not that you need a huge truck to mow lawns but to control your trailer if you are pulling every day I would want at least a F150 or f250.

    if you combo gvw is 10,001lbs you have to have dot numbers, and then jump through all the hopes. i have a 3/4 ton chevy 2500 now. i guess just want to be safe and avoid messing with the dot stuff. i was figuring on maybe a dakota with a v8. one of my friends who has two f150 that he uses in his lawncare and snow business....the regular cab is 6400lbs gvw, but his extended cab is 6600lbs gvw. he is just gonna use his regular cab truck from now on.

    What's the big deal of getting a DOT number? Are there really that many hoops to jump through?

    Exactly. Apply for the DOT Numbers, keep a copy of the application with you, and ride in WHAT YOU WANT from job to job. Simple. No Problems.

    if you got a dual axle trailer you are going to be over anyway unless you are pulling it will a lawn tractor each axle is rated at 3500 pounds so you trailer is then rated at 7000 pounds lets just use a example say you got a half ton rated at 5500 pounds ( i have no idea what they are rated at but its just a example ) 5500 ( truck ) plus 7000 pound dual axle trailer equals 12500 pound bingo you are over face it topdog its going to be hard to avoid this issue if you want to pull a duall axle now maybe single axle you can but you still need to have brakes on a single axle these days . I dont like it anymore than you but its the law so we will comply .

    actually that isn't correct. d.o.t. told me it is based on the gvw stamped on your trailer doesn't matter what your axels are same way as your truck you go buy the sticker inside your door.

    i don't mind being legal. my trailer is in the shop atm getting brakes put on the other axel and a brake away box on it.

    and there is more to d.o.t. # than having your forms in your truck.

    logs, medical evaluation, driving safety records, and etc...

    anyways, thanks for advice for those who gave it. i was just looking for advice on a lighter truck not what someone should do even though i see very few peps useing d.o.t. #. i am just trying to stay legit and out of trouble thanks again.

    also my neighbor who also does lawn care has a single axel landscaping trailer it is also stamped 3,500lbs for g.v.w. he has 2 f150 the regular cab is stamped 6,400lbs g.v.w. , but his f150 extended cab is 6,600lbs g.v.w. he is just gonna stick to pulling a trailer with the single cab f150 also to avoid messing with d.o.t. #
