5/6ton mini vs 8-9ton Midi

    Looking into replacing our Bobcat 435 as we have landed road rebuilding work for the local municipalality rebuilding catch basins, new drainage, etc. Weighing out the options in the 5-6 ton vers an true 8-9 ton like a Cat 308. Our 435 doesn't like structures much beyond a catch basin top, ideally we would like the lift a sump into place and build the typical structure with one machine but it may not be possible. The price point seems to be +- 25-30% more for the 8 tons and you lose the ability to move it with the f550 and 7ton tilt trailer. sticking with then 5-6 ton Anyone have experience with the new bobcat 50/55s and the Cat 305/305.5? Also, what are your opinions on the 8-9 tons? We have never tried the class but I see more and more around.

    For the type of work you are doing you will wish you got a 8 tonne machine . I recommend the Deere/hitachi 85 , kubota 080, and the bobcat /doosan 85. I have ran all of them and they all are great machines.

    6 ton machines can get some real work done but this still sounds like 9 ton duty to me. Kx080s look real nice. I have a kx 161. Eventually I'd like to replace it with a 080 and a U 35.

    I have a Case CX75 (9 ton) and can set 4,000lb. blocks at 75% reach over the side and about 90% each over the blade. I have the short stick but have the bucket and thumb on all of the time. Feels very stable while doing it.

    If the large percentage of the work is what you described then an 8-9 ton machine would be my choice.

    I will add that the 308 has hands down the most hyd power on the aux circuit of any excavator that size. I am considering one myself.

    Yea it seems a 308 type would fill the gap between our 5 ton and our 315D, anyone have experience with the rubber tracks on these 8 tons? I see a few around but mostly the poly pad on steel tracks, do they leave marks pavement?

    Road liner pads, that what we call them. Don't go true rubber track on an 8 ton class, just ask any Morooka rental company how insanely expensive they are for a 24" wide track.
    We use our 305 for everything and the odd time the ZX75 will show up, and it's just so much better, sitting beside your boom is awesome.

    I have an e50 long reach….If you by chance were to get a long reach, I would suggest the e55, as it has a bit more balance….I would not get any machine, unless you really make an effort to make sure the dealer is competent…I made the effort, but could not ascertain if their mechanics were knowledgable …Learned the hard way, so for me , I will not be getting any more Bobcat equipment…Don`t get me wrong, nice people but could not fix the problems I have had….If I were depending on their equipment, I would be out of business now, but as it stands I am just way behind on the things I use the excavator for….Our Kubota dealer is very good, and that is who I depend on…..I have , in the past, (long time ago) had good results with Cat, but it is intimidating dealing with them, but you get what you pay for…Tony

    Dealer is bringing out the E55 Tommorrow so we can see what it can pick up mainly and how it loads the triaxle also trying a Cat 308 Friday. One thought is for right now keep the 435 and run it a little longer and buy the 8 ton now , eventually buying a new smaller machine after we see how the 8 ton fits in. Also it sounds like Ron was saying these big rubber tracks weren't working out on the 8 tons atleast in this area and the street pads are the norm now. Thanks for the replys interested to see how these demos go.
