6.0 Vortec vs. 6.6 Duramax

    Okay guys, currently I have an 2006 6.0 gasser and just purchased another 2013 6.0 gas. Really pleased with the small block, although mileage is only about 10 mpg pulling. Both trucks are extended cab long beds with 4x4. I have had 4 of these trucks and the motor and tranny are trouble free.

    However, while I was waiting for the dealer to locate my new truck, he let me borrow a brand new 2014 Dmax for a few days. Man oh man, I have had 7.3 power strokes in the past, but these new diesels are way more powerful stock than the old ones.

    This truck impressed the heck out of me. I do not really NEED a diesel to just pull around my lawn trailers, but I kind of WANT it. I can cruise without the truck shifting down going up hills and I would say it EASILY has 3 times the amount of pulling power of a 6.0 gasser.

    For those of you that have the newer diesels, how is the Urea? Is it a pain? Any problems with the newer DMax? What is the mileage you average? Thinking about selling my older truck and getting another new one...

    I am just kind of stuck whether to get a dependable and adequate 6.0, or get a duramax. The duramax with the allison is about $8000 more than the gas.

    What do you guys think? If I can save on fuel and make it last 15 years I might do it, but I don't want a lot of other BS problems like the turbo going out, this fancy exhaust system, etc...

    That vortec is 6.2 liter I believe. Very good engine.

    Not the one I bought. I have heard of the 6.2, but I don't think you can get it in the 2500HD. I'm not for sure, but I think now days you can only get the 6.0 gas and the diesel in the HD trucks. They got rid of the big block 8.1 a few years back.

    I think the 6.2 is in caddy's and maybe the half tons? All I know is the one I bought has the 6.0 Vortec.

    If you're thinking about getting a Duramax and not a Dodge hater you should test drive a Cummins.

    My Chevys got the 6.0 as well and I definitely hear you on the gas mileage and towing power going up hills. I've been having similar thoughts and feelings lately about going diesel but the Ram seems slightly more appealing. I've heard good things about both though.

    We had an 06 dmax 6.6 for a few years, and was trouble free. My buddy has an 07.5 and just turned over 250k miles and it has never seen a day in the shop outside of bare minimum routine maintenance, and he tows 6k+ lbs probable 3 days a week.

    Having recently owned a diesel pickup that wasn't under warranty and spending a fortune on repairs and maintenance which more than canceled out any fuel savings, I will be sticking to the good old 6.0 gas from here on out.

    I have a friend with an 10' DMax, absolutes loves it, expect that he's already had to do 2 out of 8 injectors and it only has 49k on it. Another buddy has an 06 with 218k and it hasn't been in the shop once. My 6.0 has 215k on it(knock on wood), and in both situations the truck starts to get worn out about now no matter what motor is in it. Both motors could go the distance, that's for sure. Just remember you can't fill your truck the same time your filling mowers(in most cases) :laugh:

    If you want a diesel for the great towing performance, by all means get it. If you are only minding dollars and cents, unless you tow really heavy every day or run lots and lots of miles it will never pencil out.

    Have 3 2005 gas and 1 2005 diesel. Have spent more $ on repairing the one diesel then the 3 gas combined. Yes it has more power but its just not worth it. In MY opinion

    I would not trade my GM 6.0 gasser for and diesel . I honestly like my 6.0 better than my diesel . The way I see it you either want a diesel or you need a diesel . In my own experience I see no benefit in owning a diesel in a light truck .:waving:
