6 cylinder vs. 8 cylinder truck for towing?

    Trying to get some feedback from some of you guys who have owned both or currently own both. Does the towing power of the v8 justify the greater gas consumption? Is there even a noticible differnce in gas consumption? I'm not hauling around 10k plus pounds, just a fully furnished 6x12 with two mowers. Any comments or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    I had a 06 f150 v-6 with 16-20 mpg empty and 11 mpg towing
    I have a 1990 f-250 V-8 that gets 9-10 mpg towing
    the acceleration on the v-6 was pretty slow, but it could hold the speed limit on most hills, and thats all i ask out of a truck. :) MPGs based on pulling a 6x12 trailer

    Towing you will come out close. Not very noticeable difference. The 6 takes long to get to speed therefore longer acceleration is needed. 8 gets you there faster but uses more gas at cruise speed. So it washes out.

    The only advantage is non-towing V-6 is noticeably more economical.

    make sure the transmission will handle it remember your mowers are up to 3000# each and an enclosed will not be light.

    there is no way that his mower will be 3,000# each! the whole trailer will weigh aound 3500-4000 and a 6 can handel it but breaking and acceleration will suffer since it will be with a 1/2 ton truck. v8 are great because if you cut grass you most likely do landscaping and need the suspension.

    The average commercial ZTR is around 1,000 pounds.

    V 6 towing, Its ok, Its slower, and over all your going to stress the motor more. It will die sooner
    Bottom line, if you already own the v-6 then stick with it. If your buying another truck, then go with the v 8

    Depending on your mowers, a v6 should handle the load pretty well. The suspension should be pretty much the same unless you plan on going up to a 3/4 or 1 ton truck with the v8 and stay with a 1/2 ton for the v6. Assuming you are looking at 1/2 ton trucks, the suspension will pretty much be the same for a v6 or a v8, no huge changes at all.

    If you plan on driving around without the trailer a lot, the v6 will probably be best. The v6 will have slower acceleration loaded and have a harder time maintaining the speed on hills. It should have no problem towing a 6x12 trailer, I'm assuming your load won't be too heavy, maybe 1500lbs.

    The new v8's actually aren't getting too bad of fuel economy unloaded. You will definately have more power for accelerating and maintain the speed on hills. It will also be good should you decide to tow something heavier. Loaded fuel economy will be pretty much the same as the v6 when loaded.

    If you plan on getting a fairly new truck, I'd go for the V8.
