I cannot find a rental place in my area that has any kind of seeder for rent. What are my alternatives just short of buying one? I thought of aerating the lawn and then throwing seed down as a possible procedure. Any other ideas for renovating a struggling lawn?

I do a lot of core aerations and over seeding jobs in the fall. If you do a double aeration it will work good.
The slit seeder works better because it will make a better seed to soil contact. The knives dig uo soil and seed is placed at the same time.
Also if you are renting a core aerator make sure it is a good commerecial unit, not the small bluebird ones, they do not do any good not heavy enough.
