I rented a dethatcher this week and there was an oil leak. Long story short, oil went bone dry and the engine seized. Damage waiver cost me $6.00, saved myself on that one. I asked him if I would have been responsible for repair without the damge waiver even though the machine was defective, and he said I would have been, that could have gotten messy cause I disagree.

I know how hard I use rental equipment so I would never rent anything with out the extra few bucks on the insurance. The last aerator that I rented crapped out with stripped gears and a broken chain, but thats not my problem. I had to rent a spreader one time when mine broke down an hour away from home. The rentals wheel fell off and the hopper broke almost in two when it hit the ground, not my problem either. Insurance, it pays.

Yes. However, some insurance policies which you should already have cover you against rental equipment.
