Is it a good engine, or should I steer clear?
Used to use and work on them on boats all the time. They were fine. No better or worse than similarly priced units.
Yanmar make one of the best diesel engines. I have a old yanmar tractor and the engine never gave me any problems. They are used on boats alot and my uncle works on boats, says they are great.
my neighbor has a yanmar diesel excavator, runs excellent, and has plenty of power
probably tied with the perkins/caterpillat engines.
John Deere used them oin their small diesels for years and may still.
BEHIND KUBOTA THAT IS
Flex-Deck (Brad) has a lot of experiece with these on John Deere 400 & 500 series tractors. He would probably be able to give the best field report on them for mowing use. But as I recall... they have treated him very well and lived extremely long lives.
Used two Deeres that had them, a 430 and an 855. Great engines.
I have one on my dixie chopper. Its is a great engine. 400+ hour oil changes and a 10000 hour engine life. How can you beat that.
