There is a repo auction coming up in my area with about 70 low hour commercial mowers. Lots of exmarks and toros.

I was wondering if anyone has been to one before or bought any equipment from one of these type auctions before?

I go all the time. , watch out for the phantom bidder, remember the buyers premium, dont bid to win bid what you want to pay, Remember that somebody wants to get money for this equip, and they will have bidders that look like you are me bidding things up.
I have gotten great deals , and also seen guys pay the same for used as new would cost.

Phantom Bidder? I know people will have their buddies in the audience bidding the price up but how to counter?

Pre-determine the absolute maximum price you are are willing to pay, and don't go over that. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the auction and convince yourself it's only 5 or 10 more than you planned to pay. But you can 5 or 10 yourself broke at the auction, I've seen it become a competition of sorts and have watched people pay more than new for some items. Take your wife or significant other along and let her know what the maximum you want to pay, that way she can give you a kick if you start to go over:D

grassin, I buy lots of stuff at auctions every year. Repos, seized goods, police , city, municipal, farm, store close outs etc I go to them all. Some I buy to keep and use some I buy to sell others I buy just to try something out.
Last year 3 trucks, 1 cube van, 6 trailers, 4 mowers, tires, piles of small equipment and tools.I usually go to about 6 sales per month depending on the season. Most of the auction companies I go to e-mail me with a catalog or listing. Here are a couple of sales that are coming up near me.

cantoo, Do you usually get really good deals at auctions on mowers, or is it usually around the normal used price?

I called the guy who is running the auction and he says that the mowers usually go for about 1/2 price what they are new. Does that sound right?
