I get to one of my mowing customers homes today to pull seven bushed from their beds. Got two pulled, then this female duck bolts out from under a bush ten feet away from me. I look and there are about 7 to 9 eggs sitting there and its about 40 degrees here and the nest is in the shade. Concerned that they will get too cold, I pulled off my sweatshirt and layed it over the eggs for the duration of my visit (30 minutes). I dont know about ducks, but I beleive some bird will abandon their nest if they smell the scent of humans, do ducks? and how long do you thing the eggs will survive with the mother gone? I can only hope that she returned quickly (or should I say "quackly") after I left.

i know that if you boil the eggs for around 3 minutes each, and pour salt and hot sauce on them, the will taste good.

There is a good chance that she will return. What some birds do is run away from the nest, not in fear for their life, but for fear of the safety of the eggs. She may have been trying to lead you away from the nest and to come after her. Herons are know to fake a broken wing when you get to close to their nest, in hopes that you will go after an "injured" bird. Let us know if she came back.
