Ok here is my dilemma I need another dump truck and I would like to buy one before 12/31 so I can get the tax break this year in 09.

I have the opportunity to buy a GMC 4500 with the 8.1 liter gas engine 2wd with complete dump bed on it. The price will be around 40K and I have about 2300 in GMC rebates I can use from my credit card. I also heard GM is cutting this mid size truck out of thier fleet. I guess sales are bad. I really like this truck and always have, I just dont know how well it will work or last. I would assume it would last alot longer then your standard 1 ton.

    or

I can buy another 1 ton pretty much the same truck I have now just newer. An 2009 GMC 3500 Sierra with a 6.0 liter, 2WD with complete dump bed for about 26,500 plus taxes. Minus my credit card bonus.

So basically I would spend roughly an extra 10K just for the truck. I just want to know how well the 4500s hold up, work, and perform. Like I said I have a 1 ton an 05 Sierra, and its been a good truck. Not many problems, I just run into weight issues, and towing my bobcat. I have a 7 ton trailer that I just make under the cdl limit by like 400lbs. If I get the 4500 Ill need probably a class B.

Anyone out there own a 4500 and can give me there personal opionion on them that would be great.

That 4500 probably has been sitting on a dealers lot for a long time it has two strikes against it for most people. For one it has the 8.1 gas a little piggy but reliable and the second is the truck is a 2wd. Neither of those would bother me. The only thing you have to check for is the truck have the heavier spec's.

I think GM offered a lighter axle option for the 4500 and with it being gas it may not have the S110 Dana.

As for running a regular 1 ton nowwadays no way get the 4500 or 5500 size truck a 1 ton truck is grossly under braked your always pushing the limits.

I dont care about the 2wd, but the 8.1liter will probably get terrible gas mileage, but I dont really want the diseal or the emissions that comes with them.

I am looking at this truck tomorrow afternoon. Ive been thinking about this all day Im still up in the air

I have a c7500 and have had some issues with the gm stuff on it, mainly the dash. GM is NOT standing behind their kodiak trucks since they're getting out of that market, my dash is the same as the light duty pickups and they are recalling/replacing those for free but I suppose since they don't ever plan or selling med duty trucks again they don't care about servicing our class. Go with someone who'll support the truck. ford is the obvious choice but Freightliner, pete and kw have some new offering in that class... look into it.

A F-550 with a V-10 would be a good truck or if you wanted a heavier truck look at a Freightliner M2 or a International. If you have a heavy skid steer or mini excavator that is already pushing the limits of a 1 ton don't go with another 1 ton.

you can find much better pricing on a slightly used 4500. i have seen quite a few that are 4wd and diesel for under $35,000. as far as the truck itself i can't say much about the 8.1 but i am very pleased with mine and would love to have 2 more.
