It's about more than money. It's about being with your family.

I know I wouldn't be coming in if I was your employee

Hence the reason hispanics are taking over the lawn care industry. You ask them to work and they will work no questions asked and do it daylight to dark for less money than a white man will. In my area it is 95% hispanic guys doing this work. I saw crews out everywhere today while I was out working. Had I not done our work today it would have meant I would have had to do our thursday lawns on friday and friday lawns on saturday which still equates to time away from family no matter how you look at it.

Could just skip the lawns and do them next week and have a bunch of pissed off customers that could potentially quit because you did not get them done I suppose but i certainly am not going to take that risk.

I'm not far from you. To me it is inconsiderate all around. It's just like working Christmas Day to plant color or something

I'm not sure how providing a client with a nicely cut lawn for when the family comes over for a cookout is "inconsiderate", but whatever.

Some people like to talk in absolutes as if there is only one correct way to do things. There is absolutely nothing "wrong", or "inconsiderate" about contacting your customers ahead of time to discuss mowing plans for the holiday.

Yes, if they are having an all day cookout with the family, it would be pretty rude to roll through with a mower, but that isn't necessarily the case for all people.
Not one of my clients was doing anything today during the day.
Business as usual and now I'm getting ready to grill some cow.

    Happy fourth of July!

Exactly and to tell you the truth we have gained more long term customers by working holidays when neighbors are home. They see us finally and decide to come out and talk and get a price. Everybody here knows it poured in buckets yesterday. No work yesterday meant we needed to work today. Even my wife that makes 200k to 400k a year (she is on target to make 400 this year!!!!) said she wouldn't be upset if somebody came to cut our lawn on a holiday and that is from a very successful woman with expensive taste and a business degree. If it wouldn't upset her then it won't upset 99% of people and that has been our experience over the last 30 years.

I'm very jealous! I just emptied 7" of rain out of the gauge that has accumulated since early Wed a.m. and it's still raining. Also, the forecast is 80% chance of rain tomorrow and 60% chance Saturday. Very likely we won't turn a blade until Monday. #waybehind

Well I certainly didn't force my employees to work. But I did pay them extra. We worked from 7 to 3 today. Taking my wife and kids to the fireworks tonight. Got all my work done to boot. Can sit back and enjoy the evening. All is well. I think we'll all live for doing something so terrible as working today.
