My Lazer HP 48" / 21 HP Kawasawki engine back fires everytime I shut it down, (unless I let it idle for about a minute). Is this abnormal?

Also, do these machines need some kind of Spark Arrestor?

My son says they do. Mine is a 2003 model.

    Freshcut,

The old backfiring when the engine is shut off trick. This is a common comment and most likely it's nothing to be concerned about.

ALL of the v-twin engines on the market to day will backfire when shut off. The only question is how often and how severely they will back fire. About all we can do is try to minimize the backfiring by shutting the engine off at 1/2 throttle or above. Most of us have been told for years to shut the enignes down at idle. On the v-twin designs used today this is the incorrect procedure. Shutting these big v-twins down at idle should cause a backfire nearly evertime you shut them off. Just remember 1/2 throttle or above and you should be able to minimize the backfiring. If the problem continues excessively I'd recommend getting it into your dealer for inspection.

    Thanks

    Terry
