What engine speed are you shutting the engine off at ?
You need to shut it off at 1/2 throttle or higher, this will help the situation.

Mine does ther same thing. I have the 25 hp Kawasaki and if I let it idle for a minute or so then shut it off it will not backfire. I tried shutting of at 1/2 throttle and it did not work. Previously I had the Kohler and it did the same except shutting off at half throttle worked some of the time. Should shutting off at 1/2 throttle work opn the Kaw?

I have the same problem. I have a 24hp honda and the dealer told me to shut it off at full. I allways back fired. I tried at half and most of the time it back fired. then I tried it at idle and it worked all the time. Also I think it's because I run 93 octane and the compustion is higher.
