Bad Boy Pics

    For those that have asked for pics. Here is a few pics of the deck after approximately 10hrs of mowing, which was residential, a repo house with waist high grass, a pasture field, and a good part of it immediately after a 1/2" rain.

    Looks like you have added spacers to get the blades to hang below the deck skirt or are those the stock spacers?

    Everything is stock in the pictures. The blade bolts right up to the spindle, and there are no spacers etc between the two. The front baffle is above the the blades about a half inch, but the back baffle extends below the blade the same amount. I assume what you're referring to spacers are dust covers for the bearings, as they cover the bottom of the bearing.

    Got your PM...

    What you need here is a "kicker baffle" or "turbo baffle" at the rear of the discharge opening.

    What You'll want to do is take a good piece of metal and sort of "mimic" the grass buildup.

    You'll want to start there and make a piece to fit there from the rear edge of the opening, pointing towards the spindle in the manner that the grass is built up.

    A piece of angle L may do the job.
    This is a trial and error type thing.
    May take several trys to get the angle right and get the shape of the baffle right.

    In the end, the simple solution may not work and you may have to have someone in a fab shop roll and break you a custom rear arc baffle like has been done to this deck.

    Envy,

    What are the benefits of adding the "kicker" other than keeping it from clumping in the corner? How wold it affect the cut and discharge?

    Well, once you get the kicker design fine tuned to do it's best, there is really no down side.

    The only one I can think of is that in some cases, like if you are doing VERY HEAVY cutting that you maybe shouldn't be doing... well, they you will notice the kicker will consume power while moving huge amounts of clippings. Sometimes you can even hear a clanging sound as the sail of the blade slaps into the clipping flow spraying off it. Might also act a little weird with an OCDC.

    The benefits are that the kicker will stop the corner clumping, and it will improve the discharge velocity, distance and sometimes even the feather pattern to the discharge.

    On some decks it also increases the cut quality. The reason is that some decks cycle clippings out faster, and on top of it, the deck is also limited in the amount of the discharge clippings the right blade can pull on around the back of the blade arc and throw back into the mix between the center and right blade.
