As with any successful turf management program, cultural practices are critical for success. Reducing plant stress will prevent many problems from happening in the first place.

In Missouri follow these recommendations http://extension.missouri.edu/p/g6705 but substitute organic fertilizer and compost for nutrient sources. Ignore the amount of N recommended for synthetic fertilizer as organic matter is more efficient in supplying nutrients.

Weed control will be your biggest challenge. If you need help with organic pest control, PM me.

id like to start with a soil test but it takes 2wks for results? isnt right now the ideal time to topdress and overseed so the grass has some time to establish itself?

In Missouri we mostly deal with TTTF, KBG, Rye.... some Zoysia.

For these cool season turfgrasses (except zoysia) the best time to over seed is late Aug- early Sept. Compost top dressing can be done in spring and fall.

How important is overseeding in your lawns at the current time? Overseeding is nice in some contexts, but not necessary for the overall cleanness of the turf... your efforts may better be spent this time of year breaking down the thatch and building up soil structure so that your seeding in the Fall takes better...
This time of year it doesn't hurt to put seed under the compost topdress...
Mulchmowing and mowing high during the heat of Summer are 2 important aspects of 'organic' lawncare...
