battery--to vent or not?

    Just took the battery out of my ZTR for winter and noticed the two vent holes are unplugged without vent tubes. Can I just plug those holes off since the battery isn't in an enclosed space? Kinda been a slow leak out those open ports since it took lots of distilled HOH to top it off.

    Batterys usually leak because there over filled, On motorcycle type batteries I never fill them to the top. They use a lot of water, if they leak you need a new battery or its overfilled. I wouldn't recoent plugging off the vents.

    I don't understand the question. Are you saying that the plugs went missing?

    There just aren't any plugs in the vent holes and there are no vent tubes connecting to them either. Some battery acid is leakin out the open vents. I either need to plug those holes or attach tubes to let the liquid drain to the ground. I'm thinking just plug the holes since the battery is not in an enclosed space---like a car trunk.

    Batteries do not need to let liquid drain.
    So you are missing the plugs?
    The factory plugs are designed to pop off at a specific pressure so the battery does not explode. Sounds like you need a new battery.

    You have a "wet" battery. Those vents are needed to vent the gasses of the battery. As it heats and cools, the battery needs to "breathe". You can put a hose on them, to keep any acid off the machine. You, also, need to keep up on the water level....don't overfill. Next time you replace the battery, get a sealed, maintenance-free AGM-type. They cost more, but, seem to last longer and perform better. Lastly, keep a maintenance charger (Battery Tender Jr and similar) on your batteries. That'll help them to last way beyond expected.
