best advertising this year?

    so given our economic situation, what has been everyones best way of advertising this year? we have already hung over 300 door hangers, but we just havent got a large response yet. i know it is still early in the year, but i was hoping for more of a response by now. i know the economy is hard, but has it affected everyone else this much too? thanks,

    I'm slower this year, but I know a lot of people are shopping around this year trying to find the cheapest guy.

    All my regulars have called and scheduled, but only a handful of new customers this year, all have come from recommendations.

    the other thing bugging me is that a homeowner showed my a "coupon" from a guy who cleans windows, and is getting into the light install business. in big letters his handout says he will be ANY price by at least 25%. the guy has no experience and wants to lowball the hell outta eveyone. i am debating calling him and telling him off, but it wouldnt do any good.

    That's when you explain to them that if they want to go with them then they can risk him causing a short, burning their house down and he probably doesn't have the proper business insurance to cover it...their choice.

    You can't fight them, you have to move to the next customer. If they want the cheapest guy then their probably not worth your time anyway.

    We've been off this year as well, which is expected being in the metro Detroit area. But the new jobs we are closing have been bigger jobs which is good. I would rather take a $2000 job than two $1000 jobs any day!

    You will always have lowballers. The good news is that most of them wont be around very long because they don't make enough money. They also tend to mess things up, causing a call to you to come fix it anyway.

    Sales are off, renewals are off. But the phone started picking up yesterday so we are keeping our fingers crossed.

    This year advertising hot spots are lawn signs on installed jobs and referrals. Next round of advertising hits tomorrow so that will help.

    we're holding steady. we've closed 21 new jobs this year, and I am hopeful for 20-30 more. Our renewals are good, I expected 10-15% to not renew this year because only 1 last year did not renew. So far, about 5% in terms of number of clients, but 10% in terms of sales dollars those clients represented.

    The best advertising has been the postcards, I have closed 5 jobs, aprox $12,000 from one round in October and another round is about to hit. at a cost of a grand for printing, addressing, mailing for 1300 or so jumbo cards to the right neighborhoods. This is a great investment, but I understand it hurts to spend.

    I've also closed about 4 jobs off of yard signs, around 9 grand, but those come at the expense of the phone ringing constantly for you to hang customers lights. If you want to pick up work for training, Then signs are the way to go. many internet companies will make 2-color 2 sided silk screen signs for 3-4 bucks each if you buy 250 of them. since these get picked up by cities and competitors, I buy in bulk rather than a few signs from a local sign shop.

    Yellow pages has brought me 6 jobs so far, and I spend 4-5 grand on that advertising.

    Internet searches brought me a couple. I get a free google listing from my yellow page advertising.

    truck graphics and referrals brought the rest, and I pay 10% on referrals, so referrals cost but they almost always close. Truck graphics cost me about 3 grand a year to outfit 2 trucks, but worth it.

    I would be interested in more information on the google, yahoo etc. This is my first year, and I am the only one in this area doing any of this. Got a ton of direct mail going out, 5200 through the chamber of commerce here and 4500 through HBL

    ah, a resurected thread. kinda neat to look back last year and see the posts. we went on to get 39 clients last year, many from yard signs, postcards, yellow pages, truck graphics, and referrals. we got a few from web searches. I still think that dollar for dollar you cannot beat yard signs.

    I'm gonna do another thread on media.

    So what soes this search engine optimization generally run - Dave has it been worth looking at in your experience??
