What's the best type of block to use for a fire pit wall? I have heard that concrete is not good to use, and I have also heard that brick will explode. Is there any truth to either of those?
And what would you guys recommend that I use to build the walls out of? I was thinking I would just use the kind of block that you would build a retaining wall out of. I have seen fire pits with walls made out of this before.

I have a pit dug and I am going to road bed rock in the footing and tamp it so its solid and then sit the stone on top of the footing. Any other helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

FYI the pit is a rectangle if that makes a difference.
