I've been sending out a few bids as read-only MS Word docs with password protection, but I've heard that PDf files might be better, especially for folks that don't use MS Word.

I've seen PDF conversion programs from free to 100 bucks or so.

Any suggestions on which ones to use or not use and why?

i use scansoft professional. i think it was like 40 or 50 bucks at staples. I only send out .pdfs.. plus if you have different fonts or graphics on your word docs the people dont have to download them, because it will be stored in the .pdf....

PrimoPDF (mentioned above) and CutePDF are great, free, and I have both on my computer since each one has its strong points.

I also have Bluebeam PDF. It's $150, but it's set up to work great with AutoCAD, and that price includes the markup functions. Those are why I got it- you can mark up and annotate pdfs, so it's a great way to make sure you and your client are on the same page with any changes to an install, all via email. Gas isn't getting any cheaper.

I installed Primo PDF today and just used it for emailing a couple of proposals. So far, so good.
