    Two months ago!

To properly sheer white pines you need to due candle pruning as the new growth extends from the tips of the branches. Before this new growth unfolds you simply cut back soft tissued candles in half or so and that limits the extent of new growth that season.

White pines grow from the branch tips so if you cut a white pine back into the old growth that stem will no longer grow outward, although the side branches will continue to grow. If you cut all the green off of a branch then youve just killed that branch as pines do not have latent buds similiar to deciduos that will grow after severe pruning.

    Better luck next year.
