Bidding on a 130 home subdivision

    Hi guys,

    I am new to the lawn game. While enquiring about home owners association fees, I learned that our lawn keepers are paid $1770 per visit to maintain our 130 home subdivision. Only the front yard is maintained. Back yard is extra.

    I found out that the home owners association is looking to up the cuts from 28 per yr to about 42 per year. They also want a cheaper deal than we are currently getting. Of course the idea popped into my head of open my own lawn business and submitting a bid for my subdivision less than the current $1770.

    I talked to the workers the other day and they told me it takes their crew of 4 from 7am-6pm to do the whole neighborhood.

    I figure I need two riding mowers and 3 weedwedgers- so a crew of 5. How much should I offer to pay workers to weedwedge- my partner and I are willing to work the riding mowers.

    I admit to being a complete novice to the lawn game, and i appreciate any advice and recommendations for a beginner like myself.

    What would you do if you could be in a position to submit a bid to a 130 home lot? (front yards are 15x15ft or so)

    i'd say you'd be in way over your head if you put in a bid for that subdivision.
    you just don't start a business because you have a chance to place a bid.
    how much forethought have you put into this? you'll need to have reliable workers and put them on the books. you'll need to carry business insurance, apply for any licenses that your state may have, and sit down and write a business plan.
    anyone can cut grass, but a large percentage of people fail at this, because they fail to plan.

    I'm new as well but i think they are called trimmers....not weedwedgers

    I thought maybe this was some new craze going around (weedwedging)?

    I too think you might be in over your head on this one, there is a lot of cost involved in doing this right.

    That has a nice red neck ring to it. I think I'll replace trimming with whipper snip, on my flyers.:usflag:

    All in good fun, I'm waiting for that one member who is offended by everything to come defend this thread.

    hey, aren't you the guy also asking about using homeowner riders to start your business? do yourself a favor and stick to your current job(if you have one)

    Monte, call your equipment what you what. But I think you need to start over on your plan. 130 units, and you want to go from 28 to 42 mowing's a year? And do it for less. You must first ask yourself why is the company that is doing it now charge what they charge. And how much do they really make from the association after all costs. You may what to just ask them.     First of all forget having a partner. Second you dont need riders to do 15x15 lots..My experience, all ya need is 1 guy. If your gonna have multiple trucks and trailers fine get more guys. But for one setup just get yourself a helper. You dont want to have to pay 2 guys to lean on the truck shooting the breeze all day.

    130 lots. 7am-6pm he definitely needs some help. It has to be done in one day, they won't allow him to be there all week and start at the first place again just as he gets done with the last
