Anyone having trouble with black lava rock killing landscape plants due to the black color causing increased heat?

At some condos that we maintain, that happened to all of the yews that are in black lava rock. But, some of the yews that are in river rock still remain. These are strips in between concrete drives, so there is a heat problem to start with.
