If I am just laying decorative stone I use 6mil black plastic. Much cheaper than landscaping fabric. Does anybody use black plasitc for mulch and or around plants but just cut a bigger hole and then put fabric around the plants.

I use fabric for rock only. No plastic

Do you have any propblems with the wieght of the rock pulling the fabric apart and making it more easy for weeds to enter. I can get a huge roll of 6mill plastic (1200sqft) for under $60. The fabric is costly even in bulk.

I buy heavy fabric and it is expensive and I charge accordingly.

I never recommend or install anykind of weed barrier if you do your prep work correctly and the ongoing maint it's not neccesary.

We use 6 mil black poly under rock. Good soil prep and preen under mulch. Fabric seems like a waste of money in most cases. After the initial installation, most weeds come from seed that blows in, not from underneath. Roots seem to go right down through fabric.

Fabric/plastic is good under rock for us northerners, because the freeze/thaw cycles will really put a lot of dirt around the bottom inches of rock... but yes,,, lots of room around the plants when using plastic...

There ya go! I was waiting to see if i was the only one who "charges accordingly."

Say im putting in $500 bucks of expensive Rock... I'm not going to skimp out on the Landscaping Fabric!
Thats like putting up 4' Retaining wall and not putting the proper base under it! If the customer wants it, quote them TO DO IT RIGHT! If that means charging 160 to install fabric so be it!

Just because something costs more or we can charge more does not make it right. In my 40 years of experience, plastice does a better job of preventing weeds in rock than fabric does.
