bluegrass billbugs in upper Midwest

    We normally treat with Merit in mid to late April, but last year was different.....seems the optimum timing was late March, 2007 (according to Iowa State University). Normal timing has been late April -- early May in years' past.

    Anybody getting ready to treat lawns with Merit? Or are you delaying for awhile? What works best for you? Thanks much:usflag:

    I tried a new product last year called ALOFT... it is a combination of clothianidan and bifenthirn. The clothianidan lasts longer than merit, so you can go early if needed and you will get a much longer residual.

    I talked to Dr. Harry Niemchek who is retired from Ohio State and he was very impressed with ALOFT in his trials on billbug.

    Ideally you would set pitfall traps to determine adult emergence hence chemical timing. Alloft should do a great job where timely trapping isn't a realistic option.
