Just bought brand new an exmark commercial x series 21" w/ bbc. Right upon cold startup the motor surges wile not loading. Engage bbc and it smooths out, disengage and surges. I noticed today while mowing for first 30 min a slight surge. Obviously the motor is warm, and under load so to me this issue warranted a post.

Curious what u all think. I know it's a very common mower now and wanted to see how many of you have/had this issue.

It should run smooth whether under load or not once at operating temp.

My other push mowers have kaws and never do/did this. They don't have the bbc.

Does this issue clear up once motor breaks in?

Any input is appreciated. I won't be tearing carbs apart etc. seeing as it has no more than 10 hrs.

Did it do this when you picked it up at the dealer ?

It did do that. I was told that is normal on these motors until their warm or not under load. Something about the way the carb setup. Never ran a push mower with bbc so I wasn't sure what's normal.
My riders don't do it but being hydraulic I figured well they are under load if even just slightly to turn the hydro pumps.

In hind site I feel like I should have told him no dice, or requested a different one. But I do or, should i say did trust him for the most part.

You got fed a line of BS..... NO engine is supposed to surge if everything is correct.

Read this thread even though it's a Honda in question and note robert@honda's reply, The same thing holds true for any engine......

Take it back to your *cough cough* dealer and tell them to clean or replace the carb so it runs properly......

I've had three of these motors on Exmark mowers, still have two. Everyone had the surge until they got about 10 hrs on them then it went away, they run perfect now.

Yeah yeah yeah...... Had the carb been cleaned when the machine was service it would have ran correctly from the get go, As I said in another post...... Surging only wears throttle shafts/linkage and governor components quicker......

Would you drive a new vehicle off the lot not running correctly ?

I was in a hurry and needed the mower yesterday if u know what I mean. So I just paid the man said ok and went and put it to work. If it were a larger purchase I would NOT have been so easily convinced.

I took it back to dealer and he 'adjusted govoner'. I could see the throttle linkage and govoner components being worn out really quickly if this is left go or if constant adjustment is necessary. Not to mention looking like a simpleton pulling your mowers off to go mow properties with engines in full surge mode.

I've seen other companies crews in my area run their z mowers with this issue. It just makes the equipment look and sound poorly maintained. Just plain out un professional.

Runs a lot better with the adjustment now. Other than this issue i am happy with it.

    Thanks for the input everyone.
