I was wondering which is prefered, or do I need both?
I use broadcast exclusively. Drop spreaders offer a lot of risk of burning if misused or uninformed on proper usage. I would recommend the earthway broadcast or if you have a JDL (John Deere Landscapes) nearby the lesco spreaders are very nice. Pricey but nice.
The only thing I've ever used a drop spreader for is when I'm doing seed work. To keep the seed out of beds and off the undesired areas, you know?

You would waste your time spreading fertilizer with a drop spreader. Use a drop only if you have properties with very narrow turf passages or seed. Lesco pro broadcast is preferred.
Dropspreader for ultimate small lawns............only!
I only use them for seeding as well! As far as for misapplication........my unit crushes the prills with the roller, so I go half rate in one direction and half the other direction. I don't really like a unit to compromise the integrity of the prill.
Same here, seeding only and rarely at that.
