Ok so there must be a better way right? Is there a tool or trick to removing a riser that has broken off inside both the sprinkler body and the pipe thread? I usually just have at it with a screwdriver and pick of some sort but this is becomming less and less effective. What am I missing?

Yeah you need to buy yourself a easy out. I dont know if thats what everyone calls them but thats what I call them. Home Depot or Lowes or your sprikler supplyer should have them.

Broken Nipple Extractor, I carry a couple of each size on my truck. Best invention ever:

    Pulls them out effortlessly.

I also have a set of ones like these that I don't like as much:

I bet you can get them at HD or Lowes.

Alternatively, not using cut off risers and using swing joints will eliminate the problem completly.

Yes, but doesn't help when repairing home owner installs.

I actually typically install a swing joint because i hate cutoff risers so much, In fact, I don't carry a single one on my truck.

I'll relocate the head a few inches over and use a swing joint almost every time.

On occasion if the ground is really bad I won't.

Yes, as I do however it still doesn't help removing the cuttoff riser on the homeowner system to begin with.

They arent even cutoff risers just the 1/2'' grey things...male//male.

I will look at the depot tomorrow if they dont have a nipple extractor I will head to my irrigation supplier.

    Those are SCH 80 Nipples.

They always either break at the threads under the head, or crush down and through the tee.

One thing is guaranteed however, they will fail.

Not when used as part of a swing joint. :)
