burn the grass when it goes dormant

    my dad did this for as long as i can remember. the grass always came back as green as can be in the spring. does any else do this ?

    I only heard of doing this with zoysia grass. It is a way to get rid of thatch.

    My grandfather and father both did it in the late winter or early spring and the yards never had any thatch. I haven't seen that done for many years. Verticutting and scalping/bagging will do the same thing, probably safer also....:D

    In the Mid 40's and early 50's I can remember people in my neighbor hood doing that. Back in the late 1960's an old fellow next door was burning off his back yard. Must have thought of something he either needed or forgot at the store. He just went and got in his car and drove off to town. I was at work but the neighbor on the other side had to put the fire out.
